7 Most Memorable Moments From Weekend 1

Most of The Desert Sun’s staff at the Empire Polo Club this weekend had never been to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival before.

But whether you’re a first-timer or attending the event for the 10th time, it’s hard to deny that these seven moments were made for the Coachella history books.

Craziest moment: When a Disclosure fan snuck past the barricade – twice

Security detains a man who snuck into a closed area in front of the outdoor theater stage during the filming of Disclosure at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California on April 16, 2022.

Who doesn’t love watching a wild fan try their luck against security guards (but only when no one gets hurt in the process, of course)?

Disclosure’s 7:10 p.m. set drew one of the biggest crowds on Saturday, but one attendee in particular wanted to get closer.

A man in a purple shirt strode confidently past two security guards into the photo pit directly in front of the stage, an area that requires specific credentials. He was quickly fired, but he was just getting started.

With the same two security guards blocking the area, the man got on his stomach and crawled an army into the legs and feet of the security guards, who watched in disbelief. Remarkably, it worked. He had leverage over the two security guards and he got past them. They caught up with him 15 feet later and brought him back outside the photo pit.

He did it again, managing to cross and run to the front of the stage until he was tackled to the ground – but not before one of the security guards took a selfie. — Shad powers

Sweetest moment: When two festival-goers who met at Coachella 10 years ago cut their wedding cake

They found love in a hopeless place: the dusty fields of the Empire Polo Grounds.

Lily and Jeronie Alcantara met through friends at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in 2012. This week, 10 years later, they headed back to the desert after getting married in Las Vegas on April 13.

“The first day he was like, ‘Hey, who are you trying to see? You can be my Coachella girlfriend for the weekend,’ and then the weekend became 10 years,” Lily recalled Sunday from his band’s tent near the festival entrance.

The couple, who live in San Diego, came to the site with friends around 3 a.m. Thursday to secure their place on the front line.

Given their hectic week of events – they flew straight from Las Vegas to Indio to secure their spot – the couple hadn’t even had a chance to cut into a wedding cake until Sunday, before heading to the ground for the third day of the festival. — Tom Coulter

Most Surprising Moment: When Harry Styles Dated Shania Twain

The Desert Sun successfully predicted several special guests at Coachella Weekend 1, but the one none of us saw coming was Shania Twain.

During his Friday night headlining concert, Harry Styles pretended to be confused when the opening chords of “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!” played behind him. To everyone’s surprise, Shania Twain herself suddenly appeared in a dress almost as sparkly as Styles’ to sing her hit song with him.

After their duet, the pair hugged and shared a touching moment as Styles thanked her for being the soundtrack to many memories between Styles and his mother.

“In the car, with my mother as a child, this lady taught me how to sing,” Styles said. “She also told me that men are garbage. To you, for the memories you gave me with my mother, I will be forever grateful to you,” he said. — Niki Kottmann

Most Confusing Moment: “The Catalina Whale Blender”

Late Sunday afternoon, a helicopter flew over the festival site firing a banner reading, “Kanye was busy hitting Catalina whales.” What does it mean? Your guess is as good as ours. No seriously, please tell us what that means because it left several Desert Sun reporters scratching their heads while Googling “Kanye Catalina’s whales.” It may seem to have something to do with “NFTs” and “blockchains”, but as a group of local news and arts journalists, our knowledge of these terms is non-existent. The Catalina Whale Mixer “is a global Web3 entertainment franchise, created with you and for you,” according to its website.

“The Catalina Whale Mixer was created for all whales; in life, in business and in culture. It was created for those who refuse to live within the limits others impose on you, who take risks, work hard, party hard, and live life to the fullest,” the website states.

Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, was originally scheduled to headline Sunday night, but pulled out less than two weeks before the festival. Ye was replaced by Swedish House Mafia and The Weeknd. — Erin Rode

Moment most likely to be loved by locals: Wallows’ indio tribute

Wallows frontman Dylan Minnette honored his hometown team on Saturday by wearing a No. 76 Indio Rajahs football shirt during the group’s afternoon set. Minnette, also the star of the popular Netflix show ’13 Reasons Why’, wore the blue and red jersey throughout, easily recognizable by locals in the crowd. — Shad powers

Most Memorable Group Outfit: Surf Curse as Dorothy and “The Wizard of Oz” Gang

There are plenty of contenders for the most memorable outfit at Coachella, but if you look at the wide array of musical acts that performed over 1 weekend, none came out more than the band Surf Curse, whose members wore the outfits of Dorothy and her companions. from “The Wizard of Oz”.

Despite the afternoon heat, singer and drummer Nick Rattigan donned a lion costume throughout the set – “The worst is the mane”, he joked – and finally launched into the crowd by announcing “the lion enters the den”.

We’ll see if the Surf Curse members wear the same outfits or opt for something that holds up better in the heat during weekend 2. — Tom Coulter

Most Political Moment: Tie between Run the Jewels and Måneskin sets

Killer Mike of Run The Jewels waves to the crowd while performing on the main stage during the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, Calif. on Sunday, April 17, 2022.

During the Sunday set of Run the Jewels, Killer Mike referenced Richard B. Moore, the South Carolina death row man who recently chose to die by firing squad, and said, ” I don’t believe in rape, torture and all that kind of stuff. , but I also don’t believe that the state kills people unnecessarily.” He then added “we have to fix this country” before saying “a few words for the firing squad”.

On the same afternoon, the Italian rock band Måneskin showed their support for the Ukrainian people by broadcasting images of the consequences of the Russian attacks against their neighboring country and the people affected. A close-up of Putin’s eyes inserted the sad footage, during and after which singer Damiano David shouted “F*** Poutine!”

Honorable Mention: 2NE1 Reunites

Although K-pop group 2NE1 may not be known to many who aren’t fans of the genre, it was a big deal that the group reunited on Saturday – for the first time since 2015 – for a performance during the 88rising set. Rapper and singer Jackson Wang also made an appearance. Wang is a Hong Kong artist who has released music both solo and as a member of K-pop group GOT7.
