EHCC is organizing an outdoor concert on Saturday
The East Hawaii Cultural Center unveils its new mobile stage with a free outdoor show designed to leave audiences smiling.
“Way West of Broadway: An Afternoon of Broadway tunes… and Other Uplifting Songs” will be played Saturday at 1 pm.
This hour-long concert will feature many of the cast members of Hilo’s recent production of “Beauty and the Beast” as well as the Palace Theater’s upcoming production of “The Producers.”
The inaugural concert will feature some of Broadway’s most beloved songs as well as a mix of other old and new popular songs.
The cast includes Charles Bankhead Haines, Alexander Knapp, Marlise Ahuna, Sam Deitch, Kaiulu Tioganco, Aleah Kay and Bridge Hartmann. Seating is limited, spectators are encouraged to arrive early.
Masks are mandatory.
The concert is made possible by a grant from the AARP Community Challenge, which supports “EHCC Out of Doors”, a project to build a mobile and modular outdoor stage suitable for dramatic, musical and spoken art performances.
The stage was built in a previously unused location on the grounds of the EHCC which is being transformed into an open-air theater.
The new stage is designed for travel, with a trailer as a base.
With the help of this new stage, EHCC and its resident theater director Larry Reitzer will bring programming to schools, parks, senior centers and care facilities, so that audiences unable to come to EHCC can still enjoy shows.
Programming currently being planned includes concerts of classical and jazz music, theater for young audiences, readings of plays, spoken word performances, lectures and dance concerts.

The current hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday to Friday and 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
