The music legend – who was the lead singer and main songwriter of rock band Nirvana but killed himself in 1994 aged 27 – used the blue 1969 Fender Mustang electric guitar in the video of his group’s hit “Smells Like Teen”. The iconic guitar – which is described as Lake Placid Blue in color and was the tragic rocker’s “favorite” instrument – was originally owned by the Cobain family and has been on display as part of Jim Irsay’s vast collection of rock memorabilia before that the collector cannot take full ownership by buying it at auction.

The Cobain family reportedly donated a portion of the sale to the NFL team’s Kicking The Stigma mental health awareness campaign and, according to the auction website, the guitar “still sounds great.” 30 years after its first use.

A description reads: “Guitar sounds and plays great. However, there are some wiring issues with the slide switches in particular. Only the bridge pickup works. In good condition. The neck is beautiful and the CBS finish of the beginning is still intact, feeling old and new at the same time.Although there are some scars from wild shows and being hit, the front of the guitar looks good with a few small marks and only the ribs Bottoms show real damage.
