Lanzarote Family Hotels

Sitting in the scorching sun, sipping a refreshing piña colada, watching the kids splash merrily in the palm-strewn pool.

Like millions of Brits, I desperately missed summer vacation abroad. But the question remains: how convenient and safe is it to go abroad?

Recently, during a travel window of opportunity, my wife Rachel and I, along with our two daughters Isla and Evelyn, took the plunge and packed our bags for a week in sunny Spain.

Our destination was Lanzarote, a long-standing mecca for Brits targeting guaranteed sunshine, cheap prices, spectacular scenery and top-notch accommodation.

Before we left we had a few things to sort out – besides the usual packing, currency exchange, travel insurance, and airport parking.

Yes, those pesky Covid tests and unnecessarily long passenger locator forms that cause so much confusion and anger among UK travelers.

While it all sounds a little intimidating and complicated, luckily help was at hand from Jet2, whose website has a handy “Travel Conditions” section.

Once we landed in Arrecife it was only a short 10 minute taxi ride, € 10, to what would be our home for the next few days – the Los Jameos Playa de Seaside resort .

An elegant collection of charming Spanish haciendas surrounding a palm-filled pool complex, the 530-room resort is perfect for families and couples of all ages.

A massive renovation recently took place under the watchful eye of award-winning London design agency Muza Lab, and the results are astounding.

After a welcome glass of cava in the spectacular wood-beamed fireplace, we settled into our family room.

Extremely clean (the maid called twice a day) and incredibly comfortable, our room was a haven from the Canarian heat.

We collapsed into the king-size, wood-framed beds, enjoyed refreshing ourselves with the exclusive toiletries in the immaculate and colorful bathrooms, and started each day with teas and coffees on the balcony overlooking on the Atlantic Ocean and the hotel park.

And it’s those subtropical pools and gardens that contain over 80 listed trees that form the centerpiece.

Away from the four large swimming pools, there is a plethora of entertainment, suitable for all ages, including fitness classes like spinning, Zumba, and Pilates for adults, and crafts, games, volleyball, and more. water polo for children.

Some mornings we collected putters and balls from the Club House and went to play mini golf among the volcanic rocks and palm trees, while other families hit tennis balls around the four courts.

Then, after long days of lazing around the pools, we sat down to enjoy the cheesy but enjoyable Motown and magic shows in the main concert hall, and live music in the piano bar.

Indeed, there is a lot to see and do in Los Jameos Playa, but there is still more to taste – the food and drinks are as good as any all inclusive I have ever visited.

Breakfast was a wonderful mix of continental and other freshly prepared hot items, while lunch gave us a break from the blazing sun with a choice of salads, meats, seafood and ice cream.

However, it’s the Iberian evening feasts that really uplift Los Jameos Playa’s culinary output.

In addition to the hundreds of dishes from the inventive cuisine, there were also Mexican, Italian and Chinese themed evenings, as well as a gala feast on Friday evening.

While there is more than enough to keep you entertained at the hotel, key card access allows you to stroll down charming Playa Matagorda – a long curve of sandy beach.

From there, the cobbled promenade takes you along the waterfront to the bustling resort town of Puerto del Carmen in one direction, and the island capital of Arrecife in the other.

However, other than a few nighttime walks, we didn’t really feel the urge to leave the Los Jameos Playa haven during our vacation.

And just like the scene sipping cocktails in the sun by the pool, our last minute trip to the “Lanz of Opportunities” was perfect.
