Lisa Stephen Friday’s TRANS AM Live World Premiere

The Keegan Theater announced the live world premiere of Lisa Stephen Friday’s solo rock musical, TRANS AM, featuring music from cult New York glam rock band Lisa Jackson & Girl Friday and directed by Broadway’s Fred Berman .

Opened on January 29, 2022, as part of Keegan’s 25th anniversary season, TRANS AM is an irreverent autobiography that explores the most complex and personal parts of human experience through stories and music. Lisa shares her own trans journey to understand our common human desire for self-realization and respect while exposing the absurdity of a world obsessed with otherness.

TRANS AM is making its world premiere live after almost two years of development with the Keegan Theater. The concept for the show was born out of Lisa’s BRS LIVE virtual cabaret performance, produced by Keegan’s Boiler Room Series in 2020. The first full-length version of TRANS AM was produced for audiences online as part of the virtual repertoire of the show. Keegan’s Fall 2020, winner of an overwhelmingly acclaimed award for her ‘powerful and honest portrayal of a fascinating and gifted woman’ (Broadway World) and ‘intimate, hilarious, sexy, at times sad, but always insanely engaging’ storytelling (MD Theater Guide) by Lisa.

“The experience of developing TRANS AM,” describes writer and performer Lisa Stephen Friday, “has helped me understand how much I’ve grown not only as an artist but also as a human being. . Twenty years ago, I took the stage as a transgender woman who had something to prove. Now I take the stage because I have something to share, and I hope that by sharing my experience, I can contribute a little to empowering others to live authentically.

Lisa is a musician and actress who led New York rock band Lisa Jackson & Girl Friday, one of the city’s hottest bands during their 2000s to 2006. Supported by a loyal fan base , Lisa and the band performed standing shows at some of the biggest and best clubs in town (including headlining many shows at the monthly Homocorp at the infamous CBGB). As a touring group, Lisa Jackson & Girl Friday were one of the few queer groups at the time to be featured at Pride events across the country, where they shared the stage with bands such as The Psychedelic Furs. , The Motels and Pat Benatar. . Prior to her years with Lisa Jackson & Girl Friday, Lisa worked as an actress and singer in New York City, performing in numerous regional productions at theaters such as Goodspeed Opera House, Alabama Shakespeare Company and The Ordway Theater. In 1999, Lisa toured the country in THE Buddy Holly STORY’s National Touring Company, which also starred TRANS AM director Fred Berman.

“I can’t wait for Lisa to be able to share her story, her journey and her music with a live audience,” says Berman. Lisa herself was ‘born’ on stage, performing music that presents its truth, emotional vulnerability and strength to a live audience in a crowded club in downtown Manhattan. TRANS AM has always been a continuation and an extension of the story she started telling the world about at this lackluster rock club almost 22 years ago – a story of self-assessment, self-acceptance and empowerment, all on the soundtrack of rock music to sing along. “

Fred Berman is a New York-based actor and musician who is honored to make his DC directorial debut with TRANS AM in Keegan. As an actor, he has performed the role of Timon in Disney’s THE LION KING on Broadway for the past ten years, as well as with The Public Theater, Transport Group, Soho Playhouse and many other New York theaters and regional. Fred also played drums with Lisa Jackson & Girl Friday.
