Miami musical duo ‘Magdalena Bay’ draws attention and fans – CBS Miami

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin, the Miami-born and raised musicians behind pop duo group Magdalena Bay, have been gaining a lot of attention lately, including being named Best Pop Act 2021 by Miami News Times on last month.

It was a big surprise for them.

“We didn’t know that until it was released,” Lewin said.

“My dad is so cute, he always Google searches for us. So he saw it and neither we nor anyone on our team really knew it had happened. He sent us the article and we were like awesome, ”Tenenbaum said.

Tenenbaum and Lewin, who are a couple both personally and professionally, met in 2011 during an after-school music program in North Miami, which they attended while in high school. They formed a rock band called Tabula Rasa, which CBS4’s Lisa Petrillo knows a lot about, her son was a guitarist in the band.

“Full disclosure,” Petrillo told them, “I knew you when you were in high school.”

“Yes. Matt and I met at Live! Modern School of Music. We both grew up in Miami. We formed this band and started playing rock covers and eventually started doing our own rock songs and that. This is how we started working together 10 years ago now, ”Tenenbaum said.

In just two years, since moving to Los Angeles, Magdalena Bay has featured in Rolling Stone Magazine, Pitchfork, Miami New Times and many more. Their sound is now entirely pop, inspired by Gwen Stefani, Britney Spears and Madonna to name a few.

“Yeah, I think it’s just pop music. He doesn’t have a lot of limits. There are a lot of different places pop music can go, ”said Lewin.

They also discover their music through their kitsch-cool videos posted on social networks, which they shoot and edit themselves in their small apartment.

“I’m like ‘oh my God I’m in a band and we don’t have any money for the videos. I guess we’ll make them ourselves, ”Tenenbaum said.

“It started out as a necessity, like a need for visual content, but we really fell in love with expanding the world of Magdalena Bay in the visuals. We had so much fun. That’s really what it’s all about, thinking about the dumbest and dumbest ideas and the coolest ideas and somehow bringing them to life, ”she added.

The popularity of Magdalena Bay continues to grow. They now have over 35 videos on YouTube. They are releasing a new album called Mercurial World this week, but the two remain focused and grounded.

“How does that feel? Petrillo asked.

“I think we’re just trying to keep our heads down and keep busy and we can’t think too much in those terms,” Lewin said.

“We’re totally busy and happy to see the comments so far and hope more people continue to hear it,” Tenenbaum said.
