Music teacher uses Slipknot to teach kids meter

A music teacher, Risha Allen, recently used Slipknot as an example to show his elementary students that music uses a meter. You can watch the full TikTok video below.

She explains in the clip that a student was aggravated by Eminem’s earlier example, saying he listens to metal, not rap. When Allen asks which artists he listens to, he responds with Slipknot (kid’s got taste).

“I’m a little nervous here [because] I want to identify with him,” Allen writes. “He hadn’t really engaged with me or liked the music lessons until now, so I felt like having relationships and respecting his (very personal) music would help me connect with him. “

The student then suggests the song “Wait and Bleed”. She uses a drum to set the beat as she sings. She writes, “My internal dialogue: This metal kid is getting major validation right now, the other kids are getting a lesson in pre-judgment, and everyone is practicing more meter. Big win!”

Allen then asks, “In what meter is that?” And the students enthusiastically respond with “Four!” Thus, she proved that every musician uses the meter, even those of Slipknot. “Mission accomplished,” Allen writes. “This kid loves me and is learning music now. Music builds relationships.”
